4th Grade Frequently Asked Questions
Who decides what is a ‘just right’ book selection?
At the beginning of the year, we teach a lesson with students about what qualifies as a “just right” book. We then encourage students to self-select books that they feel will be a good challenge for them. Teachers and TA’s monitor students’ book choices and can help suggest books for students based on their interest and reading level.
If my child scored poorly on the EOG is this addressed with specialists?
Each teacher will develop a Personalized Education Plan (PEP) for any student who was non-proficient on the 3rd grade EOG. This plan, which will be discussed and reviewed with parents each quarter, outlines the types of interventions that are put in place to help support the area of need. While this sometimes involves work with specialists, it can also take place in the classroom. Our team collaborates frequently with all of our specialists (math, literacy, gifted, ESL) and they are able to help support our work with students in that way as well.
Are comic books or graphic novels available in class?
Some graphic novels are available in the classroom and the school library. We encourage students to read books from a variety of genres and want them to be exposed to different types of literature.
Should I correct my student’s homework?
When we send homework, we expect that it is something students can complete independently. If they are struggling with an assignment, please let us know by writing a note on the assignment. This helps us understand where the student needs help so we can provide it during class.
